Which Label Fits a Form That Asks for Country or Region?

There is no single label that fits every form asking for “country or region.” The correct choice depends on the form’s exact category: a statistical classification, a country code, and a nationality or territory field do not necessarily use the same label.

How to check what the form wants

Start with the wording printed beside the field, not with a country name you expect to use.

Form wording or context What the relevant source establishes What to check
A statistical “country or area” field The UN Statistics Division uses M49 standard country or area codes for statistical purposes. Whether the form specifically refers to M49 and which country or area listing it expects.
A field referring to ISO 3166 ISO 3166 includes a two-letter alpha-2 country code. Whether an alpha-2 code is requested. Do not substitute a statistical M49 code for an ISO field.
A Hong Kong visitor-visa field about a person Hong Kong’s visitor visa list labels the field “National of foreign country (territory)/Type of travel document.” Follow the nationality or territory and travel-document categories requested by that field. Do not reduce them to a generic “region” without checking the instructions.

In particular, “region” is not automatically a reference to M49 statistical areas. Unless the form identifies M49, treat the term as ordinary form wording and confirm its required category.

Likewise, an ISO 3166 country code is not a replacement for a nationality, territory, birthplace, residence, or travel-document value. Those are different pieces of information, and none of the listed standards gives one universal label for all of them.

What you still need to confirm

Check the form’s instructions, any example values, and any stated coding standard. The sources below define particular uses, but they do not establish a universal fallback value or guarantee acceptance by an unspecified form or authority.

If the field does not say which list, code, or category to use, do not guess from the wording alone. Ask the organization that issued or operates the form and retain its clarification with the completed application.
